I had a little bit of a crush on Robert. He was a little on the quiet side and cute.

Robin Reddy and I were great friends in elementary school at Don Benito. So many memories: riding our skeeters (red, four wheels) home from school, lizards, iguanas, the water cave and the ‘quicksand’ leading into Hastings Canyon. Baseball and football cards (1955 Topps All Americans - Rob would crack-up looking at the Knute Rockne card saying it looked just like his dad), endless pranks, the Zorro Club, buying model airplanes at PB Carroll’s, racing our bikes through Hastings and into Sierra Madre. Playing ‘big army’ (with war surplus gear) and ‘little army’ (dinky toys and miniature soldiers). SC and UCLA football games at the LA Coliseum, marathon birthday parties with friends such as Johnny Weger (Big John) and several other classmates. In fifth grade, Robin was our Maynard G. Krebs.

Rob was very smart, a good student especially in math. Also a wonderful piano player. He loved all sports: even held boxing matches in his back yard with big regulation size gloves. Me, Ricky Wilson and a couple other friends were his sparring partners.

He was also fearless. In first grade an older - and much bigger - brother of a classmate would stop us on the way to school and give us a hard time. Robin nicknamed him “Picklepuss.” I was scared to death of him. While I hid in the bushes, Robin would sneak up on the guy and throw rocks at him all the while laughing and yelling, “Picklepuss!”, “Picklepuss!”

Rob and I pretty much lost touch in high school (I went to La Salle) with just an occasional visit after that. Our parents who met while we were in kindergarten remained good friends throughout their lives. I think Rob, his wife and their kids lived in central California when he passed away. What I remember most about Robin Reddy was his big heart.

God bless you, Rob. We miss you.
